Visitation of Mary and Elizabeth, Church of the Timios Stavros at Pelendri
Wall Painting
Byzantine, Greek Cypriot, 1335-1336
This icon of the Visitation depicts an embrace between the Virgin Mary and Elizabeth. They are holding each other's shoulders, and their heads are almost touching. The Virgin wears a blue tunic with a red maphorion, while Elizabeth wears a golden yellow tunic with a green maphorion. In this icon, we also see the unusual “foetus-type” iconography, in which both a naked Jesus and John the Baptist are depicted as “fetuses” within the wombs of their respective mothers. The infant John the Baptist bows towards the infant Christ in a more traditional foetus position. The infant Christ is in a seated position and raises his hand towards John the Baptist in a gesture of blessing. All four figures have halos. The inscription above their head reads:: Ὁ ἁσπασμός τις Θεοτόχου χε τις Ελισάβετ (The Embrace of the Theotokos with Elizabeth). The background on the left of the icon depicts a rocky mountain with small trees emerging from the landscape, while the right side includes two buildings.
